Diagnostic Puncture in Prenatal Medicine
Even with a detailed ultrasound examination, not all physical or genetic conditions can be completely ruled out. However, if there is a suspicion of a possible condition in the child, the options for genetic diagnostics, such as a diagnostic puncture, will be discussed with you, and the further steps will be carefully planned.
If a genetic evaluation within the framework of prenatal diagnostics is deemed sensible and desired by you, genetic material from the unborn child must usually be obtained, either through a diagnostic puncture of the placenta (chorionic villus sampling) or an amniocentesis using a very thin needle.
These procedures are performed in our practice under ultrasound guidance. The cells obtained are then examined in a laboratory for human genetics.
